What is JDC West?

JDC West is the largest student-run business case competition in Western Canada and is a three-day event that showcases academic competitions, athletic challenges, a social competition, and an overwhelming demonstration of corporate social responsibility. Nearly 600 students from 11 of Western Canada’s top Universities unite annually to compete in this competition that is solely organized by and for business students.

JDC West seeks to assemble the best business students that Western Canadian universities have to offer. The competition provides students an opportunity to compete with each other in all facets of business, while developing networking, critical thinking, and leadership skills as they prepare to begin their careers in the business world.

What is a case competition?

A case competition has the ability to challenge students to think critically and creatively about a real-life business case. After competing in JDC West, students are able to gain a level of confidence and professionalism that is difficult to gain from any classroom assignment or activity. At JDC West, a case team is comprised of three students and the process goes as such:

  1.   Resolution: During three hours of complete isolation, each team is required to read the business case (approx. 15-20 pages), identify the main problem, propose and implement a solution, identify the risks associated with their recommendation, and prepare a 20-minute professional powerpoint and presentation.

  2.   Presentation: After completing, competitors are transported to a presentation room where they present their recommendation to a room of 50+ peers and a panel of three to five corporate executives.

  3.   Question & Answer Period: Following the presentation, judges are encouraged to ask five minutes worth of critical questions in context with the presentation. Judges are asked to treat this time period as they would if they had just sat through a real boardroom presentation.

  4.   Feedback Period: After all teams have presented, the judges and competitors meet for a time where judges provide feedback and interact with all competitors.

In each category, the judges watch 10 to 11 teams present on the same business case and rank the teams based on a standardized rubric.
