It is with great pleasure that the City of Edmonton welcomes back JDC West 2012 for what is sure to be another successful and memorable experience for all those involved. The capital of Alberta, well known as Canada’s Festival City, offers more than 30 festivals each year. Situated along North America’s largest urban park, the North Saskatchewan River Valley offers year-round recreational opportunities for residents and visitors, and a wonderful nightly downtown skyline.
As one of the four fastest growing economies in Canada, Edmonton offers great opportunities for university graduates looking to further their education and careers. Both the city of Edmonton and the province of Alberta have recently put a focus on Health, Energy and the Environment, and Bio-Industries in order to remain a strong and productive competitor in not only the Canadian economy, but the global economy as well. With over 1.15 million residents in the Edmonton and surrounding area, the city remains a popular destination for young working professionals and individuals who help contribute to a thriving Canadian economy and cultural center.

The Alberta School of Business
After hosting JDC West 2009, the Alberta School of Business and the University of Alberta have a chance to build on past success by hosting JDC West 2012. This year’s students, faculty, and alumni at the Alberta School of Business are thrilled to showcase our school, university, city, and province once again during JDC West 2012. The 2012 competition will showcase the Crowne Plaza Chateau Lacombe as an exclusive “JDC West House,” one of the best business hotels in Edmonton’s downtown area, overlooking the North Saskatchewan River and the nearby University of Alberta campus.
The Alberta School of Business strongly supports its over 2,100 undergraduate students who will soon join the school’s large and growing network of 20,000 alumni globally. The JDC West 2012 Organizing Committee is just one of the faculty’s 19 other undergraduate student organizations, showcasing the importance the Alberta School of Business has placed on student engagement. Furthermore, tying in with our school’s newly offered “Natural Resource, Energy & the Environment” Degree and Alberta’s resource-driven economy, the JDC West 2012 theme is “Fueling Productivity.” As one of Canada’s leading business schools and a globally ranked top 100 research institution, the Alberta School of Business is eager to host Canada’s future business leaders.
Along with the Alberta School of Business, University of Alberta, and City of Edmonton, the JDC West 2012 Organizing Committee is looking forward to hosting a successful, challenging, and unforgettable weekend for all participants, sponsors, and other individuals involved in creating the best JDC West yet.

Theme: “Fueling Productivity”
As part of the vision for JDC West 2012, we aim to make sure every delegate leaves Edmonton with a clear understanding of our theme and how they are able to apply the techniques learned at JDC West to their lives and future careers.
On Monday morning, purchase a copy of the Globe & Mail and chances are you will find an article talking about the productivity gap that exists between Canada and the United States. Economists at TD Bank suggest that Canada could immediately improve productivity by adopting the best practices from across the world. So we wonder: If it’s that simple, why haven’t we done something about it? Is it too expensive? Do we have the resources?
The Government of Alberta has recognized that something can and should be done to positively impact Canada’s position as a world leader by developing an initiative called Productivity Alberta. In essence, Productivity Alberta is designed to build and support innovative and efficient business in Alberta. With their help, we have identified three pillars of productivity that will act as a foundation for the competition. Our message will focus on how innovation and changes in management and operations affect an organization’s overall productivity.
The western provinces derive much of their strength from their ability to provide resources like oil and natural gas to the rest of Canada and the world. These resources, then, play a fundamental role in fueling Canada’s export-driven economy. And just like these resources help fuel Canada’s economy, we hope our tagline, “Fueling Productivity,” will help fuel participants to ignite change in their communities. We believe that Western Canada can be the catalyst for positive change, and we are confident our theme will stir up a similar sentiment in all participants.
